The weather + more car pics

Today is Thursday, and I'm flying out to South Bend, IN, by way of Chicago to meet my car, which is being transported out to the event by SCR Performance.

Here in Colorado, it's currently raining like someone wants humanity to start building an ark... and up at higher altitude where my codriver Doug lives, he got a bunch of snow... more than a foot:


Pretty much normal late-spring weather for Colorado, but I'm hoping not to see much precipitation during One Lap. I haven't even bothered to check the weather for the event, seeing as I can't do anything about it anyway, and we're prepared for wet and cold track conditions.

Anyway, here are more pics of the car, from when I left it in SCR Performance's capable hands last Saturday. I'm told the sidewalls of both rear tires are touching the bases of the side walls of the enclosed trailer! Talk about a tight fit...






And here are a '17 Shelby GT350R and a ' 11 BMW E92 M3 two other teams from Colorado that are accompanying the Panda Express to One Lap in the trailer:






And another Colorado racing friend—a One Lap veteran—is driving his Porsche Boxster out and back with a trailer... he's a real road warrior:

Day six: NOLA Motorsports Park, Annandale, LA

On Thursday, we drove an outstandingly fun track at NOLA Motorsports Park: the north course (long). Neither Doug nor I have been here before. It's a flat but very fast and open track layout, 2.75 miles long, with some challenging higher-speed "S" bends in the back section. The layout is fairly simple and easy to remember. This is a fairly new track facility, built in 2011. Oddly, it is closer to residential neighborhoods than any other racetracks that I have been to—I'd estimate less than a third of a mile (there is an intervening thick forest of trees and undergrowth as a noise absorber of sorts). It's also the first track I've been to with palm trees on the property. Unwritten bucket list item, checked off! We drove well enough to hold on to our 7th place overall position. About our vehicle, "Panda Express"

Seems appropriate to describe the vehicle Doug and I will be driving (and coexisting in, for eight straight days) during One Lap of America. "Panda Express" is a cyber gray 2013 Corvette Z06. 2013 is the last year of the C6 generation, and it's also a 60th anniversary edition—1953 was the first year of the Corvette (back when it came with an inline 6-cylinder engine, what??). Its moniker comes from the fact that I'm Chinese American (my parents are from Taiwan, so Taiwanese American really)... no, I don't own a Panda Express franchise restaurant. I'm not sure I've ever eaten at a Panda Express restaurant (aside from maybe once at an airport somewhere, because it seemed vaguely more appealing than the other dismal food offerings). Just something to underscore the fact that the vast majority of Corvette drivers aren't Asian. Day two: Gateway Motorsports Park, Madison, IL (road course + drag strip)

Today was the second road course event, but the first with two sessions (morning and afternoon), so both Doug and I got to drive the same course. There was some concern about the 2nd track session getting canceled if things got way behind schedule, so I drove first with the idea that I might be faster of the two of us. More about that later. This track was the first that we were able to walk and check out up close, and I'm really glad we got up early enough to do the course walk... it really helped to see it directly, as opposed to just via watching other people's driving videos on YouTube. Side benefit: I had the opportunity to introduce myself to Travis Pastrana during the course walking... I didn't want to bug him while he was trying to familiarize himself with the track layout, so I just very quickly said I was a big fan, glad he was here racing with us, and if he had time some other time, I'd love to get a picture with him.
